Oxycontin cd

What is it?

An opiate and controlled drug available as sustained-release tablets in different strengths, all containing oxycodone hydrochloride. Blue tablets contain 5mg; white tablets contain 10mg; pink tablets contain 20mg; yellow tablets contain 40mg; green tablets contain 80mg. All are marked with strength and OC.

Medical Uses

Moderate to severe pain, postoperative and caused by cancer.

Dosage

Adults, new to opiod treatment or pain uncontrolled by weaker opiods, start with 10mg every 12 hours, then increase dose once a day, if necessary until pain is controlled. Patients transferring from morphine: base dosing requirements on 20mg of oral morphine being equivalent to 10mg of oxycodone. Adjust according to individual patient needs.

Special Care

Debilitated patients, liver and kidney disease, acute alcoholism, low blood pressure, pancreatitis, low circulating blood volume, underactive thyroid gland, enlarged prostate gland, raised pressure within skull, biliary tract disease, patients having had abdominal operations, inflammatory bowel disorders.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, head injured patients, depressed respiration, asthma, obstructive airways disease, acute abdomen, paralytic ileus, chronic constipation, moderate or severe liver disease, severe kidney disease, hypercarbia, delayed emptying of stomach, within 24 hours before and after surgery.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Anaesthetics, erythromycin, MAOIS, cimetidine, depressants of central nervous system, muscle relaxants, ketoconazgle, quinidine, antihypertensives, alcohol.

Known Side Effects

Headache, gastrointestinal upset, itching, nettle rash, constipation, drowsiness, weakness, sweating; tolerance and dependence can develop. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
