cd Physeptone

What is it?

An opiate analgesic preparation which is a controlled drug available as scored, white tablets containing 5mg of methadone hydrochloride marked WELLCOME L4A. Also, PHYSEPTONE INJECTION, containing 10mg per ml of methadone hydrochloride in ampoules for injection.

Medical Uses

Moderate and severe pain, addiction to opiod drugs.

Dosage

Adults, for pain, tablets, 5 to 10mg every 6 to 8 hours or same dose by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Addiction, 10 to 20mg each day at first, either by mouth or by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Then increase by 10 to 20mg each day until no symptoms of intoxication of withdrawal. Then gradually withdraw by decreasing daily doses.

Special Care

Pregnancy, underactive thy roid gland, chronic liver disease.

Avoid Use

Children, depression of respiration, acute attack of asthma, obstructive airways disease, obstetric patients.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Naloxone, rifampicin, acidifiers of urine, central nervous system depressants, MAOIs, phenytoin, pentacozine, opiates, cimetidine, buprenorphine.

Known Side Effects

Dizziness, nausea, raisedpressure within skull, euphoria, drugtolerance and dependence.
