Pegintron
What is it?
A preparation of pegylated interferon (rbe) available as a powder with diluent in 5 strengths all containing peginterferon alfa-2b (rbe). Available in 50, 80, 100, 120 and 150µg strengths.
Medical Uses
Hepatitis C in patients with HCV antibodies and high ALT levels, in whom treatment with tribavirin is contraindicated or where there is intolerance.
Dosage
0.5 or 1µg per kg of body weight by subcutaneous injection once each week for 6 months. Treatment period may need to be extended for further 6 months.
Special Care
Bone marrow suppression, debility psoriasis, disorders of coagulation. Patients who have suffered heart attack, congestive heart failure, heart arrhythmias, eye disorders should receive monitoring. Patients should drink plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, autoimmune disorders, autoimmune hepatitis, serious kidney or liver disease, thyroid gland disorders, serious psychiatric illnesses, disorders of the central nervous system.
Known Side Effects
Headache, anorexia, insomnia, 'flu-like symptoms, muscle pains, fever, hair loss, rigors, nausea, pain and inflammation at injection site. Discontinue if severe central nervous system effects, prolongation of coagulation markers, pulmonary infiltrates or acute hypersensitivity effects occur. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
