Penbritin

What is it?

An antibiotic, broad-spectrum penicillin preparation available as black/red capsules containing 250mg of ampicillin, marked with strength and name. Also, PENBRITIN INJECTION available as powder in vials containing 500mg of ampicillin sodium. Used for. ear, nose, throat and respiratory infections, soft tissue infections. Infections of urinary tract and gonorrhoea.

Dosage

Adults, capsules, 250mg to lg every 6 hours; injection, 500mg by intravenous or intramuscular injection, 4, 5 or 6 times each day; for meningitis, 2g every 6 hours by intravenous route. Children, aged under 10 years, capsules, half adult dose. Injection, half adult dose; for meningitis, 150mg per kg of body weight by intravenous route in divided doses.

Special Care

Patients with glandular fever.

Known Side Effects

Gastro-intestinal upset, hypersensitivity reactions. In rare cases, pseudomembranous colitis.
