Pentacarinat

What is it?

An antiprotozoal preparation (to combat infections by protozoan organisms) available as a powder in vials for reconstitution and injection containing 300mg of pentamidine isethionate. Also, PENTACARINAT SOLUTION containing 300mg of pentamidine isethionate per 5ml for nebulization.

Medical Uses

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in patients with HIV Specialist use.

Dosage

Adults and children, manufacturer's literature should be consulted.

Special Care

Liver or kidney disorder, high blood pressure, anaemia, leucopenia (low levels of white blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low blood platelets leading to increased likelihood of bruising and bleeding), hypo- or hyperglycaemia (low and high levels of blood sugar).

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding.

Known Side Effects

Severe low blood pressure, blood in urine, low levels of magnesium in blood, pancreatitis, bronchospasm, hypoglycaemia, heart arrhythmias, eosinophillic pneumonia.
