Pentasa
What is it?
A colorectal, amino salicylate preparation available as sustained-release, scored tablets which are light grey and contain 500mg of mesalazine marked with strength and PENTASA. Also, PENTASA SACHET, available as sustained-release granules in sachets containing lg of mesalazine. Also, PENTASA SUPPOSITORY, each containing Ig of mesalazine. Also, PENTASA ENEMA, an enema containing lg of mesalazine.
Medical Uses
Ulcerative colitis (inflammation and ulceration of the colon and rectum and to maintain condition in remission.
Dosage
Adults, tablets, acute attack, up to 4g each day in 2 to 3 divided doses. For maintenance, 1.5g in 2 to 3 divided doses daily. Sachet, acute attack, up to 4 g each day in 2 to 4 divided doses - with orange juice or water. For maintenance, 2g in 2 divided doses each day. Suppositories or enema, adults and children over 15 years, 1 into rectum at bedtime.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, elderly, protein in urine or raised levels of blood urea. Patients should be asked to report unexplained sore throat, bleeding, malaise or bruising and blood tests should be performed if blood changes are implicated.
Avoid Use
Children, severe liver or kidney disease.
Known Side Effects
Headache, blood changes, abdominal pain, nausea.
