Periactin
What is it?
An antihistamine and serotonin antagonist available as scored, white tablets containing 4mg of cyproheptadine hyclate, marked MSD 62.
Medical Uses
Migraine, allergies and itchy skin conditions.
Dosage
Adults, migraine, 1 tablet with a further one taken after 30 minutes, if necessary to a maximum dose of 2 in 4 to 6 hours. Maintenance dose is 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours. Allergies/skin disorders, 1 tablet 3 to 4 times daily. Children, for skin conditions and allergies only, aged 2 to 6 years, 1/2 tablet; aged 7 to 14 years, 1 tablet; all doses 3 times each day.
Special Care
Pregnancy, asthma, overactive thyroid gland, epilepsy, high blood pressure, raised pressure within the eye, heart and circulatory disease.
Avoid Use
Newborn babies, elderly or debilitated patients, breastfeeding, enlarged prostate gland, stomach ulcer causing narrowing, obstruction of stomach/duodenal nutlet, acute asthma attack, retention of urine.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Depressants of central nervous system, MAOIs, alcohol.
Known Side Effects
Anticholinergic effects, drowsiness, excitation in children, impaired reactions.
