Periostat

What is it?

A tetracycline available as film-coated, white tablets containing 20mg of doxycycline hydrochloride marked PS20.

Medical Uses

Additional therapy in the treat ment of periodontitis (inflammationof the tissues around the teeth).

Dosage

Adults, 1 tablet twice each day takenat least 1 hour before eating a meal.

Special Care

Oral thrush, liver disorder, phototoxicity, pseudomnembranouscolitis.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breast- feeding, achlorhydria (abnormal absence of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Phenytoin, penicillin, anticoagulants, oral contraceptives, antacids, carbamazepine, primidone, mineral supplements, methoxyflurane, barbiturates.

Known Side Effects

Hypersensitivity, oesophageal ulceration and oesophagitis, rash, photosensitivity, gastrointestinal upset, superinfections, blood disorders, increase in urea. Drug should be withdrawn in event of raised pressure within skull.
