Phenergan
What is it?
An antihistamine preparation of phenothiazine type available as film-coated, blue tablets in 2 strengths containing 10mg and 25mg of promethazine hydrochloride, marked PN10 and PN25, respectively. Also, PHENERGAN ELIXIR, containing 5mg of promethazine hydrochloride per 5ml. Also, PHENERGAN INJECTION, available in ampoules for injection containing 25mg of promethazine hydrochloride per ml.
Medical Uses
Allergies, nausea, vomiting, sedation.
Dosage
Adults, tablets and elixir, 10 to 25mg 2 to 3 times each day. Injection, 25 to 50mg given by deep intramuscular injection. In emergency can be given diluted by slow intravenous injection. Children, tablets and elixir, allergies, aged 2 to 5 years, 5 to 15mg; aged 5 to 10 years, 10 to 25mg. If being given as 2 divided doses every 24 hours, the lowest dose should be used. Children, for travel sickness, aged 2 to 5 years, 5mg; aged 5 to 10 years, 10mg; aged over 10years, 25mg. Dose to be taken the night before travelling and then repeated after 6 to 8 hours, if necessary. Children sedation, aged 2 to 5 years, 15 to 20mg; aged 5 to 10 years, 20 to 50mg. All to be given as single bedtime dose. Injection, aged over 5 years, 6.25 to 12.5mg by deep intramuscular injection.
Avoid Use
Children under 2 years (oral preparations), children aged under 5 years (injection), pregnancy, breast- feeding.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Maols, depressants of central nervous system.
Known Side Effects
Extrapyramidal effects (affecting extrapyramidal structures as sociated with central nervous system, involving movements), disorientation, drowsiness, impairment of reactions, anticholinergic effects, sensitivity to light.
