Phosex
What is it?
A preparation which is a phosphate binder available as yellow tablets containing lg of calcium acetate (equivalent to 250mg of calcium), marked PHOS-EX.
Medical Uses
Binding to phosphate in renal failure.
Dosage
Adults, start with 1 tablet swallowed whole and taken with main meals, 3 times each day. If required, can be titrated to achieve appropriate level of serum phosphate, usually in order of 2 to 4 tablets with every main meal.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, blood levels of calcium and phosphate must be monitored.
Avoid Use
High blood calcium levels.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Norfloxacin, verapamil, tetracyclines, cardiac glycosides, enoxacin, ciprofloxacin.
Known Side Effects
High blood calcium levels, gastrointestinal upset.
