Phyllocontin Continus
What is it?
A xanthine available as film-coated, light yellow, sustained- release tablets containing 225mg of aminophylline hydrate, marked NAPP on one side and SA on other. Also, PHYLLOCONTIN FORTE, available as capsule-shaped, film- coated, sustained-release, yellow tablets containing 350mg of aminophylline hydrate, marked SA350 and NAPP. Also, PHYLLOCONTIN PAEDIATRIC, available as sustained-release, mottled, light orange coloured tablets containing 100mg of aminophylline hydrate, marked NAPP and SA/2.
Medical Uses
Congestive and left ventricular heart failure, bronchospasm in chronic bronchitis, COPD, asthma.
Dosage
Adults, Phyllocontin continus and Forte, 1 tablet every 12 hours at first for 7days then maintenance dose of 2 Continus or 1 to 2 Forte, every 12 hours. Children, use paediatric tablets for bronchospasm only, aged over 3 years, 12mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours.
Special Care
Elderly, pregnancy, breastfeeding, stomach ulcer, thyroid, heart or liver disease.
Avoid Use
Children (Continus and Forte), children under 3 years (paediatric). Not to be used along with ephedrine treatment in children.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
(Xanthine component), the following reduce clearance of xanthines: influenza vaccine, oxpentifylline, viloxazine, interferon, allopurinol, clarithromycin, methotrexate, propanol, disulfram, cimetidine, ofloxacin, thiabendazole, erythromycin, carbimazole, isoprenaline, verapamil, ciprofloxacin, isoniazid, propafenone, diltiazem, mexiletine, fluconazole, norfloxacin, fluvoxamine, nizatidine. 'The following increase clearance of xanthines: alcohol, smoking, aminoglutethimide, ritonavir, moracizine, sulphinpyrazone, rifampicin, carbamazepine, primidone, barbiturates, phenytoin, St John's Wort. Plasma levels may need to be checked and dose adjustments made, if necessary. Xanthines Also, may interact with: ketamine, doxapram, 1blockers.
Known Side Effects
Headache, stomach irritation, headache, nausea, stimulation of central nervous system.
