Piportil Depot
What is it?
A phenothiazine group II available as a depot oily injection in ampoules containing 50mg of pipothiazine palmitate per ml.
Medical Uses
Ongoing treatment of certain psychiatric disorders particularly schizophrenia.
Dosage
Adults, a test dose at first of 25mg by deep intramuscular injection into the gluteal muscle (buttock), then adjusted by 25mg or 50mg increments until best response is achieved. Usual maintenance dose is about 50 to 100mg every 4 weeks, maximum 200mg each month.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, history of convulsions, brain damage, severe extrapyramidal (affecting extrapyramidal system, part of the central nervous system) responses to phenothiazines taken orally. Also, glaucoma, enlarged prostate gland, myasthenia gravis, underactive thyroid gland, thyrotoxicosis, severe respiratory disordres.
Avoid Use
Children, severe heart disorder, liver or kidney failure, phaeochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour), comatose states, severe hardening of cerebral arteries. For drug interactions and side effects, consult manufacturer's literature.
