Pork Actrapid

What is it?

A short-acting insulin preparation comprising neutral pork insulin which is highly purified available as an injection containing 100iu per ml.

Medical Uses

Diabetes mellitus.

Dosage

Usually self-administered by subcutaneous, intravenous or intramuscular injection according to individual patient requirements. effects last for about 8 hours.

Special Care

Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, f3-blockers, corticotrophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.

Known Side Effects

Lipodystrophy (changes involving fat deposition) at injection site. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
