Pork Mixtard 30
What is it?
A biphasic preparation of pork insulin which is highly purified, comprising 30% neutral insulin and 70% isophane insulin available as an injection containing 100iu per ml.
Medical Uses
Diabetes mellitus.
Dosage
Usually self-administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection once or twice each day according to individual patient requirements. Effects last for approximately 24 hours.
Special Care
Kidney or liver disease, patients transferring from animal insulins (should be warned that early signs of hypoglycaemia may not be so apparent). Infections, illnesses, stress, emotional upset, pregnancy, change in insulin source, type etc; in all these cases, dose adjustments may be needed.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Oral contraceptives, MAOIs, alcohol, β-blockers, corticotrophin, diuretics, corticosteroids.
Known Side Effects
Lipodystrophy (changes involving fat deposition) at injection site. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
