Protium
What is it?
A proton pump inhibitor available as enteric-coated, yellow tablets in 2 strengths containing 20 and 40mg of pantoprazole, as sodium sesqiiihydrate, marked P20 and P40, respectively. Also, PROTIUM IV, available as a powder in vials for reconstitution and injection containing 40mg of pantoprazole as sodium.
Medical Uses
Ulcers in the stomach or duodenum, prevention of ulceration caused by NSAID treatment, reflux oesophagitis (GORD) and its prevention, with antibiotics, to eliminate M. pylori bacteria in patients with gastritis or duodenal ulcer.
Dosage
Adults, tablets, ulcer treatment, 40mg each day taken in the morning - for 2 weeks in case of duodenal ulcer (continued for another 2 weeks if not healed) and for 4 weeks in case of stomach ulcer (continued for another 4 weeks if not healed). Ulceration caused by NSAID, 20mg each day. GORD, 20 to 40mg taken in the morning for 2 weeks to 1 month, continuing for a further 4 weeks, if needed. Maintenance dose is 20mg each day and patient should be re-assessed after 1 year and risk/benefit analysis performed. Triple therapy to eliminate H. pylori 40mg 2 times each day with 250mg of clarithromycin and 400mg of metronidazole twice each day for 1 week. Or, with 500mg of clarithromycin and lg of amoxycillin 2 times each day for 1 week. Injection, 40mg by intravenous infusion or slow intravenous injection over 2 to 15 minutes once each day for up to 1 week. Patients should be transferred to tablets as soon as possible.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe liver disorders-liver enzymes should be monitored and treatment withdrawn if these are raised.
Avoid Use
Children.
