Prozac

What is it?

An antidepressant preparation which is a 5HT reuptake inhibitor, promoting the availability of this neurotransmitter. It is available as capsules in 2 strengths: yellow/green capsules containing 20mg fluoxetine hydrochloride marked with name and strength; yellow capsules containing 60mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride. Also, prozac liquid, a syrup containing 20mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride per 5ml.

Medical Uses

Depression which may be accompanied by anxiety, especially when sedation is not needed. Obsessive- compulsive disorders, bulimia nervosa (eating disorder), pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Dosage

Adults, depression and PMDD, 20mg each day; obsessive compulsive disorder, 20 to 60mg each day; bulimia nervosa, 60mg each day. Maximum in all cases is 80mg daily and doses may be adjusted up or down to achieve best result. Special cure: pregnancy, breastfeeding, heart disease, history of fits, previous mania or hypomania diabetes, liver disease, history of bleeding disorders. Evaluate carefully before treating for PMDD and discuss risks and benefits.

Avoid Use

Children, unstable epilepsy.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Vinblastine, maois, clozapine, lithium, tramadol, einblas- tine, carbamazepine, tcads, flecainide, carbamazepine, encainide, phenytoin, tryptophan, haloperidol, drugs affecting platelets or ect, diazepam, warfarin, St John's wort.

known side effects

sleep abnormalities, sweating, anorexia, euphoria, baldness, anxiety, abnormal milk production, disturbance of vision, headache, sexual dysfunction, priapism (abnormal, persistent and painful erection of penis), dizziness, gastrointestinal upset, frequent urination and urine retention, drowsiness, anxiety, weakness, fever, convulsions, sensitivity to light, muscle and joint pains, chills, short-lived disorders of movement, liver function abnormalities. In rare cases, bleeding, serotonin syndrome. Withdraw drug if allergic reactions or rash occur.
