Puregon
What is it?
A gonadotrophin available as a solution in vials or cartridges for injection in 4 strengths, containing folitropin beta equivalent to 50iu, 100iu, 150iu and 200iu of FSH activity.
Medical Uses
Anovulatory infertility in women (ie where there is an absence of ovulation), which has not previously responded to treatment with clomiphene citrate; Also, to induce superovulation for assisted reproduction techniques.
Dosage
Women, infertility, usually, 50iu each day by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, with response monitored, consult manufacturer's literature. Superovulation, usually 100 to 225iu each day by same means, either given alone or in combination with a GnRH agonist, consult manufacturer's literature.
Special Care
Anatomical abnormalities as possible cause of symptoms should be excluded before beginning treatment. Oestrogen response and size of ovaries must be monitored to avoid overstimulation.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, enlarged ovaries or ovarian cyst not associated with PCOD, primary failure of ovaries, fibroids in womb, tumours of the ovary, breast, hypothalanius or pituitary gland.
Known Side Effects
Reactions at injection site, over-stimulation of ovaries, ectopic pregnancy, multiple pregnancy.
