Pylorid

What is it?

An H2 blocker and cytoprotectant available as octagonal, film-coated, pale blue tablets containing 400mg of ranitidine bismuth citrate, marked with logo.

Medical Uses

Duodenal and stomach ulcer, prevention of relapse of stomach ulcer, with antibiotic treatment to eradicate K pylor.

Dosage

Adults, duodenal and stomach ulcer, 1 tablet 2 times each day taken with food for 1 to 2 months (duodenal ulcer) and for 2 months (stomach ulcer). With antibiotics to eliminate K pylori, triple therapy, 400mg with 500mg of clarithromycin and lg of amoxycillin, all 2 times each day for 1 week. Or, same dose of pylorid and clarithromycin but with 400 or 500mg of metronidazole 2 times each day for 1 week. Or same dose of pylorid and metronidazole but with 250mg of clarithromycin, all 2 times each day for1 week. Dual therapy, 400mg of pylorid2 times each day with 500mg of amoxycillin 4 times each day for 2 weeks. To heal ulcer completely, continue with 400mg of pylorid twice daily for lmonth. Treatment should be for a maximum period of 16 weeks in any 1 year.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly patients, kidney disease, porphyria (inherited, metabolic disorder involving porphyrins). Possibility of malignancy should be excluded before starting treatment.

Avoid Use

Children, moderate to severe kidney disorders.

Known Side Effects

Headache, slow heartbeat, gastrointestinal upset, slight anaemia, alteration in liver enzymes, blackening of stools and tongue. In rare cases, blood changes, allergic reactions, effects on breasts in males, muscle and bone disorders, confusion, pancreatitis, hepatitis.
