Questran Light
What is it?
A bile acid sequestrant available as sugar-free powder in sachets containing 4g of cholestyramine. Also, QUESTRAN, powder in sachets containing 4g of cholestyramine.
Medical Uses
Diarrhoea resulting from surgery, radiation, Crohn's disease, damage or disease of vagus nerve, itching resulting from liver disease, billiary cirrhosis. Also, prevention of coronary heart disease in men with very high lipid/cholesterol levels in the blood who are aged between 35 and 59.Treatment of type II hyperlipoproteinaemias (high levels of lipid-bound proteins). Dosixge: adults, diarrhoea and elevated lipid and lipid/protein levels, 1 sachet each day at first gradually increasing to 3 to 6 each day after 3 or 4 weeks, taken as single or divided doses; daily maximum is 9 sachets. Itching, 1 or 2 sachets daily. Children aged over 6 years of age, dose in proportion to that of adult weighing 70kg.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, dietary supplements of vitamins A, D amd K may be needed with high doses taken long term. Any other drugs should be taken 1 hour before Questran or 4 to 6 hours afterwards.
Avoid Use
Children aged under 6 years of age, total obstruction of bile duct.
Known Side Effects
Increased tendency for bleeding in patients taking drug longterm due to deficiency in vitamin K, constipation.
