Rebif
What is it?
An immunomodulator available as a solution in pre-prepared syringes in 2 strengths containing 22µg and 44µg of interferon-β-la.
Medical Uses
Multiple sclerosis with relapses.
Dosage
Adults and children over 16 years, 8.8mg 3 times each week at first, gradually increasing to 22µg by increments every 2 weeks. Then, a maintenance dose of 44µg 3 times each week, all by subcutaneous injection. If higher dose is not tolerated, reduce back down to 22µg 3 times each week.
Special Care
Depression, severe liver or kidney disease, heart disorders, severe depression of bone marrow, history of fits. Haematology blood chemistry, liver and thyroid gland function tests should be carried out.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, history of severe depression or thoughts of suicide, epilepsy, hypersensitivity to natural or recombinant interferon beta or albumin.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Other immunomodulators (except ACTH and corticosteroids), drugs metabolized by liver enzymes.
Known Side Effects
Reactions at injection site, insomnia, flu-like symptoms, joint pains, anxiety, gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, fits, palpitations, hepatitis, thyroid disorders, allergic reactions, depression, heart arrhythmias.
