Rehidrat

What is it?

A preparation of electrolytes available as fruit-flavoured powder in sachet containing 440mg of sodium chloride, 380mg of potassium chloride, 420mg of sodium bicarbonate, 440mg of citric acid, 4.09g of glucose, 8.07g of sucrose and 70mg of fructose. Usedfor: diarrhoea, electrolyte and fluid replacement.

Dosage

Contents of sachet to be added to 250ml of water - Also, consult manufacturer's literature. Adults, diarrhoea, 100 to 200mg per kg of body weight to be drunk in divided doses over 24 hours. Then, 15mg per kg of body weight each hour until diarrhoea stops. If symptoms are mild, sufficient solution should be drunk to alleviate thirst. Replacement, 50 to 120mg per kg of body weight over 4 to 6 hours. Infants, diarrhoea, substitute solution instead of feeds to same volume, as advised by doctor, or give after breastfeeding. Replacement, stop feeds for 24 hours and give 150mg per kg of body weight of rehidrat instead. On second day, reduce dose and gradually resume feeds, in breast fed babies, give rehidrat after feeds.

Avoid Use

Obstructed intestine, impaired kidney function, paralytic ileus.
