Relenza
What is it?
An antiviral preparation which is a neurnminidase inhibitor, available as a powder in blister disks for use with diskhaler, containing 5mg of zanamivir.
Medical Uses
Treatment of influenza strains A and B when there is a community outbreak.
Dosage
Adults, 2 inhalations twice each day for 5 days, beginning within 48 hours of symptoms first appearing.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding; risk of bronchospasm - asthmatic patients or those with COPD should have ready access to fast-acting bronchodilator.
Avoid Use
Children.
Known Side Effects
In rare cases, headache, nasal irritation, gastrointestinal upset, swelling of throat due to fluid retention. Withdraw in event of acute bronchospasm and decline in respiratory function.
