Roferon-A
What is it?
An interferon, interferon alfa-2a (rbe) solution, available in vials of 3, 4.5, 6, 9 and 18 million units, in pre-prepared syringes, cartridges and vials.
Medical Uses
Hepatitis B and hepatitis C (with or without tribavirin), neoplastic disorders.
Dosage
By subcutaneous and intramuscular injection according to manufacturer's literature and patient response. Usually in order of 2.5 to 5 mega-units per square metre of body surface area, 3 times each week for up to 6 months.
Special Care
For use only under special-. ist supervision; pregnancy (women must use effective contraception), diabetes, bone marrow suppression (blood counts required), suicidal tendencies (monitor patients closely and ask them to report depression), moderate liver or kidney disorders (checks should be made on organ function).
Avoid Use
Children, breastfeeding, cirrhosis of liver, heart disease, decompensated liver disease, serious dysfunction of kidneys, liver or bone marrow, disorders of central nervous system, epilepsy.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Theophylline, bone marrow suppressants.
Known Side Effects
Depression, thoughts of suicides, flu-like symptoms, bone marrow suppression, hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar levels), gastrointestinal upset, anxiety, fits, effects on central nervous system.
