cd Sevredol
What is it?
An analgesic opiate and controlled drug, available as film-coated, capsule-shaped, scored tablets in 3 strengths, blue, containing 10mg, pink containing 20mg and green, containing 50mg of morphine sulphate. All are marked with strength and IR. AIso, SEVREDOL ORAL SOLUTION, containing 2mg per ml of morphine sulphate. Also, SEVREDOL CONCENTRATED ORAL SOLUTION, containing 20mg per ml of morphine sulphate.
Medical Uses
Severe, acute pain.
Dosage
Tablets, adults, 10mg every 4 hours at first increasing dose if necessary. Solutions, 10 to 20mg every 4 hours, increasing if necessary, if tolerated, to control pain. Children, tablets, aged 3 to 5 years, 5mg every 4 hours; aged 6 to 12 years, 5 to 10mg every 4 hours. Solution, aged 1 to 5 years, 5mg every 4 hours; aged 6 to 12 years, 5 to 10mg every 4 hours.
Special Care
Elderly, enlarged prostate gland, fits, underactive thyroid, liver or kidney disease, paralytic ileus, reduced respiratory function, reduced function of adrenal glands, raised intracranial pressure (pressure on brain), 4 hours before or 4 hours after surgery, acute alcoholism.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, paralytic ileus, children under 3 years (tablets) or 1 year (solutions), obstructive airways disease, acute liver disease, head injuries, raised pressure within brain, depression of respiration.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Cimetidine, CNS depressants, MAOIs.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, sedation, drug tolerance and addiction.
