Salofalk
What is it?
A colorectal preparation and aminosalicylate available as oval, yellow, enteric-coated tablets containing 250mg mesalazine. Also, SALOFALK ENEMA, containing 2g of mesalazine per 59ml of suspension. Also, SALOFALK FOAM ENEMA, a foam enema in a metered dose aerosol delivering ig per dose. Also, SALOFALK SUPPOSITORIES, containing 500mg of mesalazine.
Medical Uses
Tablets, mild to moderate acute flare-ups of ulcerative colitis, Also, to maintain remission of the disease. Rectal preparations, mild to moderate attacks of ulcerative colitis.
Dosage
Adults, tablets, for active condition, 6 tablets each day in 3 divided doses. Maintenance treatment, 3 to 6 tablets each day in divided doses. Enema, 1 given at night; Foam enema, 2g once each day at bedtime or as divided dose, in morning and at bedtime. Suppositories, 1 to 2 given 2 to 3 times each day.
Special Care
Pregnancy, kidney disorder. Patients should report any bleeding, bruising, malaise, sore throat of unexplained cause. Blood tests required if changes in blood are suspected.
Avoid Use
Children, blood clotting disorders, serious liver or kidney disease, allergy to salicylates, stomach ulcer.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Sulphinpyrazone, methotrexate, spironolactone, glucocorticoids, sulphonylureas, frusemide, coumarin, probenicid, rifampicin.
Known Side Effects
Allergic hypersensitivity responses, increased haemoglobin levels, loss of hair, blood changes, gastrointestinal upset.
