Serenace Capsules

What is it?

An anti-depressant preparation which is a butyrophenone available as green/light green capsules containing 0.5mg of haloperidol marked NORTON 500 and SERENACE. AIso, SERENACE TABLETS in 4 strengths all containing haloperidol; white, containing 1.5mg; pink, containing 5mg, 10mg and 20mg all marked with strength and NORTON on one side and SERENACE on other. Also, SERENACE LIQUID, containing 2mg of haloperidol per ml. Also, SERENACE INJECTION available as a solution in ampoules for injection in strengths of 5mg and 10mg of haloperidol per ml.

Medical Uses

Capsules, tablets and liquid, schizophrenia, mania, psychoses, bypomania, agitation, aggression, hehaviuoral disorders in children, additional therapy in short-term treatment of anxiety. Injection, emergency treatment in severely affected patients.

Dosage

Adults, oral preparations, symptoms that are moderately severe, capsules, 1.5 to 3mg 2 to 3 times each day. Severe symptoms or patients who are resisitant to lower doses, 3 to 5mg 2 or 3 times each day to a maximum daily dose of 30mg Then decreasing to a maintenance dose in the order of 5 to 10mg each day. Injection, emergency treatment, usually 5 to 10mg (in rare cases, up to 18mg) given every 6 to 12 hours and then switching to oral prpearations. Children, oral preparations only, 0.025 to 0.05mg per kg of body weight in 2 divided doses each day at first to a usual daily maximum is 10mg. Some teenage patients may require higher doses up to 30mg each day.

Special Care

Pregnancy, tardive dyskinesia (disorder characterized by repeated involuntary muscle movements), overactive thyroid gland, kidney or liver failure, serious heart or circulatory disorders, epilepsy.

Avoid Use

Breastfeeding, Parkinsonism, coma. Possible interaction and Side effects, consult manufacturer's literature.
