What is it?

A class II calcium antagonist available as sustained-release capsules in 4 strengths, all containing dilitiazem hydrochloride. Pink/clear capsules contain 120mg and 180mg; red/clear contain 240mg; red/white contain 300mg. All are marked with strength and name.

Medical Uses

Angina, high blood pressure.

Dosage

Adults, 240mg once each day, adjusting according to response to a daily maximum of 360mg; elderly patients, 120mg once each day, adjusting according to response.

Special Care

Mild slow heartbeat, liver or kidney disorders, prolonged P-R interval, lowered function of left ventricle of heart.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, 2nd or 3rd degree heart block, heart failure which is not under control, sick-sinus syndrome, severe slow heartbeat.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Earbamazepine, cimetidine, other antihypertensives or heart depressants, cyclosporin, digoxin, theophylline.

Known Side Effects

Slow heartbeat, nausea, swollen ankles due to fluid retention, flushes, gastrointestinal upset, headaches, slow heartbeat, heart block.
