Sofradex
What is it?
A compound preparation combining a corticosteroid, amino- glycoside and antibiotic available in the form of drops containing 0.05% dexamethasone, 0.5% framycetin sulphate and 0.005% gramicidin. Also, SOFRADEX OINTMENT containing 0.05% dexamethasone, 0.5% framycetin sulphate and 0.005% gramicidin.
Medical Uses
Inflammation and infection of outer ear. Inflammation of eye and prevention of infection - short term only, blepharitis (inflammation of hair follicles of eye lashes which may be caused by infection.
Dosage
Drops, ear, apply 2 to 3 drops 3 or 4 times each day; ointment, ear, apply once or twice daily. Drops, eye, 1 or 2 drops up to 6 times each day or more frequently if necessary. Ointment, eye, apply 2 or 3 times each day or at night if drops are being used as well.
Special Care
Long-term use in pregnancy or infants.
Avoid Use
Perforated eardrum (if for ear infections), eye infections producing pus or those with tuberculous, fungal or viral origin, glaucoma.
Known Side Effects
Superinfection, use in eyes may lead to thinning of cornea, fungal infection, cataract, rise in pressure within eye.
