What is it?
A hypnotic preparation available as film-coated, white tablets in 2 strengths containing 5mg and 10mg (oblong, scored tablets, marked SN 10) of zolpidem hemitartrate.
Medical Uses
Insomnia - short-term treatment only.
Dosage
Adults, 10mg, elderly persons, 5mg; both taken at bedtime.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, previous alcohol or drug abuse, liver disorders, depression. Rebound insomnia, symptoms of dependence and withdrawal may occur on stopping the drug - patient should be monitored for these.
Avoid Use
Children, psychoses, obstructive sleep apnoea, depressed respiration, severe liver disorders, acute lung insufficiency, myasthenia gravis.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Other depressants of the CNS, alcohol.
Known Side Effects
Dizziness, headache, gastrointestinal upset. In rare cases, confusion, loss of memory, depression, tremor, disturbed perception.
