Sudafed

What is it?

A sympathomimetic available as film-coated, brown tablets, marked SUDAFED and containing 60mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. Also, SUDAFED ELIXIR, a liquid containing 30mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride per 5ml. Also, SUDAFED PLUS, combining an antihistamine and sympathomimetic available as scored, white tablets markedM2A, containing 2.5mg of triprolidine hydrochloride and 60mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. Also, SUDAFED PLUS SYRUP, a liquid containing 1.25mg of triprolidine hydrochloride and 30mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride per 5ml.

Medical Uses

Sudafed, Sudafed Elixir, blocked, stuffy nose. Sudafed Plus, Sudafed Plus Syrup, hayfever (allergic rhinitis).

Dosage

Adults, all preparations, 1 tablet or 10ml 4 times each day. Children, Sudafed Elixir, Sudafed Plus Syrup, aged 2 to 5 years, 2.5ml; aged 6 to 12 years, 5ml; all 4 times each day.

Special Care

Overactive thyroid gland, diabetes, enlarged prostate gland, raised pressure within eye.

Avoid Use

Children aged under 2 years, severe high blood pressure, diseased coronary arteries.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Depressants of CNS, MAOIs, furazolidone, sympathomimetics.

Known Side Effects

Rash, drowsiness. In rare cases, hallucinations, disturbed sleep.
