What is it?

A preparation which is a GnRH (gonadotrophin-releasing hormone) analogue that acts on the pituitary gland inhibiting the release of gonadotrophin, resulting in a lowering of the levels of oestrogen produced by the ovaries. It is available in the form of a nasal spray, with pump, delivering a metered dose of 150µg of buserelin (as acetate) per application. Also, SUPRECUR INJECTION, available as a solution in vials containing 1mg of buserelin as acetate per ml.

Medical Uses

Endometriosis, pituitary desensitization prior to controlled stimulation of the ovaries (with gonadotrophins) as a part of infertility treatment.

Dosage

For endometriosis, 1 spray into each nostril in the morning, middle of the day and evening for a maximum period of 6 months. Treatment should begin on first or second day of monthly cycle. Infertility, according to manufacturer's literature and as directed by specialist.

Special Care

Depression, at risk of osteoporosis. Monitor blood glucose levels in diabetic patients; high blood pressure - regular monitoring required. Barrier methods of contraception must be used.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormone-dependent tumours, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Antidiabetic agents, nasal decongestants.

Known Side Effects

Mood swings, local irritation of nose, hot flushes, change in libido, vaginal dryness, sweating, nausea, headache, changes in breasts and tenderness, cysts on ovaries, pains in muscles and joints, dizziness, changes in density of bones. In rare cases with long-term treatment, adenomas (tumours) of pituitary gland.
