What is it?
A dopaminergic, tricyclic amine preparation available as reddish-brown capsules containing 100mg of amantadine hydrochloride marked GEIGY. Also, SYMMETRAL SYRUP containing 50mg of amantadine hydrochloride per ml.
Medical Uses
Parkinsonism.
Dosage
Adults, 100mg each day for 7 daysat first, then same dose twice daily
Special Care
Elderly, previous disease of heart blood vessels, congestive heart failure, liver or kidney disorders, suffering from confusion, hallucinations.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, serious kidney disease, history of or active stomach ulcer, history of convulsions.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Anticholinergics, levodopa, combination diuretics, CNS depressants or stimulants.
Known Side Effects
Livedo reticularis (a disorder of the veins resulting in a mottled 'fish-net' appearance of legs and occasionally arms), peripheral oedema in hands and feet, skin rash, effects on central nervous system.
