Synarel
What is it?
A GnRH analogue available as ametered dose nasal spray delivering 200µg of nafarelin as acetate, per dose.
Medical Uses
Endometriosis, to desensitise pituitary gland for controlled stimulation of ovaries, before IVF treatment in women.
Dosage
Women, endometriosis, starting between days 2 to 4 of monthly cycle, 1 spray in one nostril in the morning and then 1 in the other nostril in the evening, continuing for up to 6 months. treatment should not be repeated. IVF, 1 spray in each nostril in the morning and evening until control is achieved, then begin gonadotrophin treatment; Also, consult manufacturer's literature. Special cure: women at risk of osteoporosis. In IVF, treatment should be stopped at least 3 days before embryos are placed in womb. Barrier contraception should be used.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Nasal decongestants.
Known Side Effects
Headache, migraine, breast changes, depression, hot flushes, irritation of lining of nose, mood swings, hair loss, blurring of vision, numbness/tingling/'pins and needles' sensation, acne, cysts in ovaries, changes in libido and density of bone, allergic reactions, palpitations, vaginal dryness.
