What is it?
A class II calcium antagonist available as film-coated, sustained-release tablets in 3 strengths containing 10mg, 20mg and 30mg of nisoldipine.
Medical Uses
Prevention of stable, chronic angina, mild to moderate high blood pressure.
Dosage
Adults, 10mg once each day taken in the morning at first, to be swallowed without chewing before food. Then, increase to a maintenance dose in order of 20 to 40mg once each day. The maximum is 40mg once daily.
Special Care
Low blood pressure, heart failure producing symptoms.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, impaired liver function, aortic stenosis (narrowing of aorta), heart shock, within 1 week of heart attack, malignant high blood pressure.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Carbamazepine, ilblockers, cimetidine, quinidine, azole antifungals, rifampicin, phenytoin, grapefruit juice.
Known Side Effects
Weakness, dizziness, fluid retention, pains in chest, tingling/ numbness/'pins and needles' sensation, headache, tremor, muscle pains, shortness of breath, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, skin reactions, flushes, frequent urination, high levels of ALT, CPK, AST (drug should be stopped if these do not fall again).
