What is it?

An H2 Blocker Available As Film-Coated, Green Tablets In 3 Strengths, All Containing Cimetidine. Green Containing 200mg; Green, Oblong Containing 400mg; Green, Oval Containing 800mg. All Are Marked SK&F; 200 And 400mg Ones Are Marked TAGAMET; 800mg Ones Are Marked T800. Also, TAGAMET EFFERVESCENT, White Effervescent Tablets Containing 400mg Of Cimetidine. Also, TAGAMET SYRUP Containing 200mg Of Cimetidine Per 5ml. Also, TAGAMET INJECTION Containing 200mg Of Cimetidine Per 2ml, In Ampoules.

Medical Uses

Duodenal And Benign Stomach Ulcers, Recurrent Ulcers, Stomal Ulcers, Dyspepsia, Oesophageal Reflux And Where Gastric Acid Has To Be Reduced.

Dosage

Adults, Oral Preparations, Duodenal Ulcer, 800mg At Bedtime Or 400mg Twice Each Day For At Least 4 Weeks, Then 400mg Taken At Bedtime (Or Twice Each Day) For Maintenance. See: Manufacturer's Literature For Other Conditions. Injection, According To Manufacturer's Literature, By Intravenous Injection Or Infusion, Or Intramuscularly. Children, Oral Preparations, Aged Over 1 Year, 25 To 30mg Per Kg Of Body Weight Each Day In Divided Doses. Injection, According To Manufacturer's Literature. Special Cure: Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, Impaired Kidney Function. Malignant Disease Should Be Excluded Before Starting Treatment And Patients Receiving Drug Long-Term Require Monitoring.

Possible Drug And Food Interactions

Theophylline, Intravenous Lignocaine, Oral Anticoagulants, Phenytoin.

Known Side Effects

Rash, Dizziness, Tiredness, Diarrhoea, Confusion, Depression, Hal Lucinations, Abnormal Enlargement Of Breasts, Liver Damage Which Is Reversible. In Very Rare Cases, Acute Pancreatitis, Leucopenia (Decline In White Blood Cells), Aplastic Anaemia, Pancytopenia (Decline In All Blood Elements), Thrombocytopenia (Bleeding Caused By Decline In Blood Platelets), Interstitial Nephritis (Kidney Inflammation), Fever, Slowed Heartbeat (Bradycardia) And Sinus Bradycardia, Muscle And Joint Pain, Headache, Heart Block, Rapid Heartbeat, Anaphylaxis.
