Tanatril
What is it?
An antihypertensive and ACE inhibitor, available as oblong, scored white tablets in 3 strengths containing 5mg, 10mg and 20mg of imidapril hydrochloride.
Medical Uses
High blood pressure.
Dosage
Adults, 5mg each day to begin with taken at same time daily, 15 minutes before eating meal. Then increase if needed after 3 weeks to 10mg once each day, taken in same way. The daily maximum is 20mg. Salt or volume depletion should be corrected before treatment starts and any diuretic being taken must be stopped 2 to 3 days beforehand. Elderly patients, 2.5mg once each day to begin with, then adjusted according to need to daily maximum of 10mg.
Special Care
Surgery, aortic stenosis (narrowing of aorta), impaired liver function, psoriasis, enlarged, damaged heart, haemodialysis or apheresis using high-flux membranes. In patients with heart failure, low blood sodium levels or volume depletion, there is risk of severe low blood pressure developing.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, angioedema (widespread swelling due to fluid retention), kidney failure, severely impaired kidney function, angioedema caused by previous ACE inhibitor treatment.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Immunosuppressants, sympathomimetics, corticosteroids, potassium supplements and potassium - sparing diuretics, anti- psychotics, NSAIDs, oral hypoglycaemics, lithium, allopurinol, anaesthetics, cytostatics, rifampicin, narcotics, procainamide, desensitising treatment for insect stings and bites.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, severe low blood pressure, allergic reactions, dizziness, angioedema, cough, kidney failure, weariness.
