Tavanic
What is it?
An antibacterial and 4quinolone, available as scored, oblong, film-coated, white tablets in 2 strengths containing 250mg and 500mg of levofloxacin.
Medical Uses
Mild to moderate infections including complicated infections of the urinary tract, soft tissue and skin infections, community-acquired pneumonia, acute flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, acute attacks of sinusitis, pyelonephritis 9 a form of kidney inflammation). Also, TAVANIC INFUSION, a solution containing 5mg of levofloxacin per ml.
Dosage
Adults, tablets, 250 to 500mg once or twice each day for up to 2 weeks. infusion, 250 to 500mg by slow intravenous infusion lasting at least 1 hour, once or twice each day for up to 2 weeks.
Special Care
Impaired kidney function, porphria (inherited metabolic disorder involving porphyrins), deficiency in G-6-PD (an enzyme). Withdraw in event of persistent and severe diarrhoea. Patients should avoid exposure to strong sunlight or UV light.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone, epilepsy.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Probenecid, sucralfate, corticosteroids, iron, cimetidine, antacids, fenbufen, NSAIDs.
Known Side Effects
Rise in liver enzymes, gastrointestinal upset. drug should be stopped in event of occurrence often- don disorders. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
