Timoptol

What is it?

A β-blocker, available as eye drops in 2 strengths containing 0.25% and 0.5% timolol maleate, available in metered dose or unit dose format. Also, TIMOPTOL-LA, available as a gel-forming solution in 2 strengths containing 0.25% and 0.5% timolol as maleate.

Medical Uses

Ocular hypertension, certain glaucomas.

Dosage

Adults, 1 drop of 0.25% solution twice each day into eye(s), increasing to 0.5% solution twice each day if required.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, withdraw gradually. Patients should report any other eye symptoms. Heart function must be monitored after filtration procedures.

Avoid Use

Children, uncompensated heart failure, heart block, heart shock, asthma, sinus bradycardia, past obstructive lung disease, soft lenses.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Adrenaline, antihypertensives, verapamil, quinidine, diltiazem, clonidine, β-blockers.

Known Side Effects

Eye irritation, allergic effects, systemic β-blocker effects (e. g. cold hands and feet, tiredness, stomach upset, rash), bronchospasm, worsening of myasthenia gravis, gastrointestinal and CNS effects.
