What is it?
A combined opiate and anticholinergic preparation available as white tablets containing 2.5mg of diphenoxylate hydrochloride and 25µg of atropine sulphate, marked with 51 and logo.
Medical Uses
Diarrhoea.
Dosage
Adults, 4 tablets to begin with then 2 tablets every 6 hours until condition improves. Children, aged 4 to 8 years, 1 tablet 3 times each day; aged 9 to 12 years, 1 tablet 4 times each day; aged 13 to 14 years, 2 tablets 3 times each day.
Special Care
Acute ulcerative colitis. Serious dehydration and electrolyte imbalances must be corrected before beginning treatment.
Avoid Use
Children aged under 4 years, pregnancy, breastfeeding, pseudomembranous colitis, obstruction of intestine.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Depressants of CNS, MAOIs.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, anticholinergic effects, disturbances to CNS, paralytic ileus, gastrointestinal upset, toxic megacolon, allergic responses.
