What is it?

A CNS stimulant and controlled drug available as scored, white tablets in 3 strengths containing 5mg, 10mg and 20mg of methylphenidate, marked with strength and code.

Medical Uses

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children.

Dosage

Children aged over 6 years, 5mg once or twice each day at first, then, if needed, increase every week by 5 to 10mg to a maximum daily dose of 60mg as divided doses. If child's condition does not improve after 1 month, treatment should be stopped.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, epilepsy, high blood pressure, emotional disorders, psychoses. Blood counts should be regularly performed and blood pressure, weight and height monitored if child is being treated long-term. Treatment must be under specialist supervision and drug should be carefully withdrawn.

Avoid Use

Agitation, severe anxiety, history in family of tics or tourette's syndrome, glaucoma, overactive thyroid gland, heart arrhythmias.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Guanethidine, alcohol, TCZD pressor agents, MAOIs, anticoagulants, phenylbutazone, anticorwulsants, tics.

Known Side Effects

Insomnia, weakness, rapid heartbeat, nervousness, tics, rash, lowered appetite, blood pressure changes, drowsiness, gastrointestinal upset, headache, impaired ability to carry out voluntary movements, dizziness.
