Trimopan
What is it?
A folic acid inhibitor available as scored, white tablets containing 100mg and 200mg of trimethroprim marked 2H7 and 3H7, respectively. Also, TRIMOPAN SUSPENSION, a liquid containing 50mg of trimethroprim per 5ml.
Medical Uses
Infections responsive to trimethroprim, including those of the urinary tract.
Dosage
Adults, prevention, 100mg taken at night; treatment of acute infections, 200mg twice each day. Children, treatment of acute infections, aged 4 months to 2 years, 25mg; aged 2 to 6 years, 50mg; aged 6 to 12 years, 100mg. All doses twice each day. Prevention, 2.5mg per kg of body weight taken at night.
Special Care
Elderly, breastfeeding, impaired kidneys, deficiency in folate. Regular blood tests must be carried out on those receiving long-term treatment.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, megaloblastic anaemia, seriously reduced liver function, severe kidney impairment where levels in blood cannot be checked.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, skin effects, deficiency in folate. In rare cases, death of epidermal skin cells, erythema multiforme (a skin disorder).
