What is it?
A class I calcium antagonist, available as sustained-release capsules in 3 strengths containing verapamil hydrochloride. Yellow/dark blue, contain 120mg marked V120; yellow, contain 180mg, marked V180; yellow/dark blue, contain 240mg, marked V240.
Medical Uses
Angina, mild to moderate high blood pressure.
Dosage
Adults, angina, 360mg once each day to a maximum of 480mg. High blood pressure, 240mg once each day, unless new to verapamil, in which case start with 120mg each day, to a daily maximum of 480mg. Special cure: pregnancy, 1st degree heart block, weak heart - should be treated before starting Univer, acute phase of heart attack, impaired liver or kidney function, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, disturbance in heart conduction, Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome.
Avoid Use
Children, 2nd or 3rd degree heart block, porphyria (inherited metabolic disorder involving porphyrins), severe slow heartbeat (bradycardia), uncompensated heart failure, sick sinus syndrome.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Quinidine, digoxin, B-bloekers, grapefruit juice.
Known Side Effects
Flushes, constipation. In rare cases, nausea, vomiting, headache, allergy, impaired liver function.
