Urdox
What is it?
A preparation which is a bile acid available as film-coated, white tablets containing 300mg of ursodexoxycholic acid.
Medical Uses
To dissolve cholesterol gallstones that are radiolucent.
Dosage
Adults, 6 to 12mg per kg of body weight each day taken as divided doses or single, nightly dose. The daily maximum is 15mg per kg of body weight. Continue to take for 3 months after stones have dissolved.
Special Care
Women of child-bearing age should use non-hormonal methods of contraception.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breast- feeding, stomach ulcer, gall bladder that is not functional, radio-opaque gallstones, chronic liver disease, inflammatory conditions of the bowel.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Agents that reduce levels of cholesterol, bile acid sequestrants, oral contraceptives, antacids.
Known Side Effects
Calcification of gallstones, gastrointestinal upset.
