What is it?

A 4-quinolone compound available as white, oval tablets containing 400mg of norfloxacin, marked MSD 705.

Medical Uses

Acute and chronic infections of the urinary tract, with and without complications.

Dosage

Adults, cystitis, 1 tablet twice each day for 3 days; UTI with complications, same dose for 7 to 10 days; chronic UTI, sane dose for up to 3 months. Tablets should be taken with water at least 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours afterwards.

Special Care

Past epilepsy, deficiency in G6PD, myasthenia gravis.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, growing adolescents and children before puberty.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

NSAIDs, antacids, iron, oral anticoagulants, cyclosporin, didanosine, zinc, fenbufen, theophylline, other quinolones, nitrofurantoin, probenecid, sucralfate.

Known Side Effects

Diarrhoea, nausea, headache, dizziness, heartburn, rash, abdominal cramps, irritability, convulsions, anorexia, disturbance of CNS, nerve damage, sensitivity to light, numbness/tingling/'pins and needles sensation', tremors, fits, Stevens Johnson syndrome, toxic skin effects, haemolytic anaemia, pancreatitis, kidney failure, disturbed vision, vaginal thrush, jaundice, confusion, allergic reactions, hepatitis, tendonitis, (withdraw drugs), rupture of tendons.
