What is it?

An hormonal progestogen preparation available as white tablets containing 5mg of norethisterone marked SEARLE and with a U.

Medical Uses

Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation), menorrhagia (long or heavy menstrual periods), dysfunctional uterine bleeding, metropathia haemorrhagica (endometrial hyperplasia-irregular bleeding due to excess activity of oestrogen), postponement of menstruation, endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome, breast cancer.

Dosage

Women, dysmenorrhoea, menstrual disorders, 1 tablet 3 times each day for 10 days then 1 twice each day for days 19 to 26 of the next 2 cycles. Postponement, 1 tablet 3 times each day beginning 3 days before period is expected to occur. Endometriosis, 1 tablet 3 times each day for at least 6 months, increasing the dose to 4 to 5 tablets if breakthrough spotting occurs. PMS, 1 tablet each day from days 16 to 25 of monthly cycle. Breast cancer, 8 tablets each day to start with, increasing to 12 daily, if necessary.

Special Care

Epilepsy, migraine, diabetes.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breast cancer dependent upon progestogen, past thromboembolic disorders, undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, liver dysfunction, severe itching, previous itching or jaundice during pregnancy.

Known Side Effects

Liver disorders, gastrointestinal upset.
