Valclair
What is it?
A long-acting benzodiazepine available as suppositories containing 10mg of diazepam.
Medical Uses
Short-term treatment of very severe, disabling anxiety that may be accompanied by insomnia, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, additional treatment for epilepsy, cerebral spasticity, spasms in muscles, pre-medication before anaesthesia.
Dosage
Adults, anxiety, up to 30mg each day as divided doses; insomnia, 5 to 10mg, taken at bedtime; alcohol withdrawal symptoms, 20mg with a repeat dose, if needed, after 2 to 4 hours; epilepsy, up to 60mg each day in divided doses; cerebral spasticity, up to 60mg each day in divided doses; muscle spasms, 40mg daily; pre-medication, 5 to 20mg. Children, cerebral spasticity, up to 40mg each day; premedication, 2 to 10mg.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly, impaired liver or kidney function, chronic lung insufficiency. Should be withdrawn gradually and not used long-term.
Avoid Use
Chronic psychoses, depressed respiration, acute lung insufficiency, obsessional states and phobias.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Depressants of the CNS, alcohol, anticonvulsants.
