Vallergan
What is it?
An antiallergic preparation which is an antihistamine of the phenothiazine type, available as film- coated, blue tablets containing 10mg of trimeprazine tartrate marked V10. Also, VALLERGAN SYRUP containing 7.5mg of trimeprazine tartrate per 5ml. Also, VALLERGAN FORTE SYRUP, containing 30mg of trimeprazine tartrate per 5ml.
Medical Uses
Itching, nettle rash, premedication before surgery.
Dosage
Adults, itching and nettle rash, 10mg 2 or 3 times each day with a maximum of 100mg daily. Elderly persons, 10mg once or twice daily. Children, for itching and allergic conditions, aged over 2 years, 2.5 to 5mg 3 or 4 times each day. Premedication, consult manufacturer's literature.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, liver or kidney disorders, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, phaeochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour), underactive thyroid gland, myasthenia gravis, glaucoma, enlarged prostate gland.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Antihypertensives, hypoglycaemics, alcohol, sympathomimetics, anticholinergics, MAOIs, depressants of CNS.
Known Side Effects
Sleepiness, rash, drowsiness, impaired performance and reactions, heart disturbances, low blood pressure, depression of respiration. Anticholinergic and extrapyramidal effects, convulsions, raised levels of prolactin in blood, jaundice, abnormally low level of white blood cells, jaundice, sensitivity to light (with high doses).
