Velosef

What is it?

An antibiotic preparation which is a cephalosporin available as capsules in 2 strengths both containing cephradine. Blue/orange, contain 250mg, coded SQUIBB 113 and blue, contain 500mg, coded SQUIBB 114. Also, VELOSEF INJECTION as powder in vials for reconstitution and injection in 2 strengths, containing 500mg and lg of cephradine.

Medical Uses

Infections of skin, soft tissues, respiratory, gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, joints and bones. Also, for prevention of infection during surgery.

Dosage

Adults, capsules, 1 to 2g each day in 2, 3 or 4 divided doses with a maximum daily dose of 4g. Injection, 2 to 4g by intramuscular or intravenous injection or intravenous infusion in divided doses to a daily maximum of 8g. Children, capsules, 25 to 50mg per kg of body weight in 2 or 4 daily divided doses. For inflammation of middle ear, 75 to 100mg per kg of body weight each day in divided doses, every 6 to 12 hours to a daily maximum of 4g. Injection, 50 to 100mg per kg of bodyweight each day in divided doses. All treatment should continue for 48 to 72 hours after symptoms have disappeared.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, impaired kidney function, known hypersensitivity to beta lactam.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, allergic hypersensitive responses. In rare cases, blood changes involving white blood cells (leucopenia, eosinophilia, neutropenia), rise in levels of urea and liver enzymes in blood, pseudomembraneous colitis, positive Coomb's test (a test to detect Rhesus antibodies), thrush infections.
