Venofer

What is it?

A haematinic preparation which is an iron-hydroxide sucrose complex available in 5ml ampoules at a strength equivalent to 20mg of iron per ml.

Medical Uses

Anaemia caused by iron deficiency when iron cannot be taken orally or there is a need to rapidly replenish the body's iron stores.

Dosage

Adults, according to manufacturer's literature, delivered by slow intravenous injection or infusion.

Special Care

Risk of anaphylaxis - must be given carefully under medical supervision with resuscitation equipment available.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, liver damage, previous allergic or anaphylactic reactions, asthma or eczema, chronic or acute infections.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Iron taken by mouth.

Known Side Effects

Headache, low blood pressure, nausea, metallic taste in mouth, anaphylactic-tvpe reactions.
