Ventolin Evohaler
What is it?
A bronchodilator/anti-inflammatory preparation which is a selective 132-agonist, available as a metered dose aerosol delivering 100µg of salbutamol per puff. Also, VENTOLIN ACCUHALER, for use with breath-activated inhaler delivering 200µg of salbutamol as sulphate per puff. Also, VENTOLIN SYRUP, containing 2mg of salbutamol as sulphate per 5ml. Also, VENTOLIN ROTACAPS available as clear/light blue capsules containing 200µg and clear/dark blue capsules containing 400µg, both marked with strength and name for use with Rotahaler. Also, VENTOLIN INJECTION available as a solution in ampoules containing 50µg of salbutamol as sulphate per ml. Also, VENTOLIN INFUSION, available as a solution in ampoules containing 1mg of salbutamol as sulphate per ml. Also, VENTOLIN RESPIRATOR SOLUTION, for hospital use only containing 5mg of salbutamol as sulphate per ml in bottles. Also, VENTOLIN NEBULES for use with nebulizer available as single dose units in 2 strengths containing 2.5mg and 5mg of salbutamol as sulphate per 2.5ml.
Medical Uses
Bronchospasm, reversible airways obstruction, asthma. Injection, severe bronchospasm.
Dosage
Adults, Ventolin Evohaler, attack, 1 or 2 puffs; prevention of exercise or allergen-induced asthma, 1 to 2 puffs before exposure or exercise. Ventolin Accuhaler, 1 puff as needed or 10 to 15 minutes before exposure or challenge. Ventolin Rotacaps, acute attack, 200 or 400µg as 1 dose; prevention, 400µg 10 to 15 minutes before exposure or challenge; daily maximum is 400µg 4 times each day. Ventolin Syrup, 5 to 20ml3 to 4 times each day. Injection, 8µg per kg of body weight by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection every 4 hours. Or, 4µg per kg of body weight by slow intravenous injection, repeated as needed. Infusion, consult manufacturer's literature. Respirator solution, as directed by specialist physician according to manufacturer's literature. Nebules, 2.5 to 5mg nebulized up to 4 times each day. Children, Ventolin Evohaler, as adult dose; Accuhaler, as adult dose. Rotacaps, acute attack, 200µg as needed; prevention and daily maximum, half adult dose. Syrup, aged 2 to 6 years, 2.5 to 5ml; aged 6 to 12 years, 5ml; aged over 12 years, 5 to 10ml; all doses 3 to 4 times each day. Injection and infusion, not for children. Nebules, same as adult dose.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, toxic thyroid gland.
Avoid Use
Children under 2 years (syrup).
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
β-blockers
Known Side Effects
Headache, dilation of peripheral blood vessels, rapid heartbeat, fine tremor, paradoxical bronchospasm, low blood potassium levels. Any adverse side effects associated with use of Ventolin Evohaler should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
